Is Mahatma Gandhi a Spiritual Personality?

There is a strong discussion circling around the Religious authorities whether Mahatma Gandhi is a religious personality. He did preach and follow the doctrine of passimism while facing the enemy but he never preached it religiously. For e.g, he did not ask people to follow it because God told him to do so. Forgiveness is a divine virtue and can even melt the hearts of the most fearsome criminals but that is a moral virtue and not a spiritual one only. Its true that the Mahatma did preach many spiritual ideals in his Ashram but the ones which he implemented during the Struggle for independence was  mainly that of non-cooperation and passimism. It still remains a question how far his philosophy is applicable in a world when any nuclear powered country attacks another country. Will passimism change the heart of such a country?
